Dedicated Servers

Dedicated Video Streaming Servers with Turnkey Managed Red5 / Wowza Streaming Engine
  • Each server includes already installed turnkey manged RTMP server (Red5/Wowza), WHM/cPanel license to host unlimited domains.
  • The rtmp side is managed and also ffmpeg and other required tools: Our administrators setup your rtmp applications and restarts the rtmp server as needed so you don't need to pay an administrator for the linux servers. Our admins deploy ffmpeg with necessary codecs and other tools required by our apps.
  • On high traffic sites powered by demanding script frameworks (ex. WordPress) we recommend servers with 32Gb RAM to be able to handle many simultaneous requests without performance downgrande.

  • Contact us to ask for plan order links are not available or you need custom hardware . Before ordering, estimate the length of your project: due to setup costs involved, a longer billing interval (minimum contract duration) means lower price per month.

  • After ordering please specify in a ticket: extra memory/disk selection for C1 (recommended: memory C1 m), preferred Linux flavour and version (recommended: Centos 6/7), SoftRaid preference (recommended: Softraid 1).

  • * Unlimited C server bandwidth is for standard site usage (hosting a regular site that also includes bandwidth intensive functionality like streaming, vod or file sharing but does not focus on it).
Servers have 1000 Mbps dedicated connection (maximum speed available for bursts) but average use should be around 500 Mbps. Canada servers are with a different data center that mainly targets regular site hosting. If datacenter determines that server connection is used mostly for streaming, video sharing or file sharing, connection may be limited until upgrading to a different bandwidth option. Site will need to be transferred to a server with dedicated 1000Mbps connection (like S1), that's more cost efficient in this situation .
  • * 100Tb bandwidth on dedicated 1000Mbps port for S servers, can be used each month (input and output) as needed, without restrictions. Usually 100Tb is not reached due to other hardware limitations or usage distribution in external networks. 100Tb/month is equivalent for using server's connection at around 30% capacity (within good performance parameters).
    100Tb/month means ~ 3 333Gb/day or ~ 139Gb/hour or ~ 38.5 Mb/second which is ~308 Mbps.
  • If you calculate cost per Gb for this streaming server, it starts from ~0.01$/Gb which is at least 10 times less compared to most rtmp streaming providers (including Cloud) where 1 Gb is at least ~0.1$ . So even if you're using 20% of allocated bandwidth per month for your solution, it's 2 times cheaper than most cloud streaming providers.
  • Simultaneous user capacity is better compared to VPS and clould provider instances that usually share a connection (similar to VPS, multiple cloud instances share a 100 Mbps or 1000 Mbps conection).
  • Getting a more powerful server can allow using more of the allocated bandwidth, expecially on demanding sites where serving may be limited by required processing power. So getting a faster server can lower actual price per Gb.

  • Softraid 1/0 : Servers with Softraid can be used to replicate content (Softraid 1) for read performance and redudancy in case a disk fails or for performance (Softraid 0) to stripe content on 2 disks for faster reading/writing. We recommend Softraid 1 to prevent downtime and complete loss of data that can be caused by a disk failure.

  • IPs: We provide all dedicated servers with 4 IPs: 1 for host and first nameserver, 1 for secondary nameserver, 1 for website, 1 spare (in case main site IP gets blacklisted). More can be added for extra $3/month.

  • Delivery Time: Contracting formalities, setup takes some time and need to be scheduled with the data center. Installing streaming and conversion software also takes some time. It can take about a week or more after order processing to get everything up and running.

  • Trial - How to evaluate performance: Our demos and shared plans are hosted on similar servers, so you can evaluate these before ordering a dedicated server. For servers in specific locations contact us and we'll provide testing links if such server is available.

  • SSH root access is NOT provided for servers using our Wowza Streaming Engine license key. If you need SSH, get the Red5 server variant and provide your own Wowza license key if you need Wowza.
SSH root access can be provided if client assumes full responsibility for using it. Unexperienced or malicious administrators with such access can compromise server by permitting installation of exploits or making it completely unusable. Recovery in such situations is not possible and our administrators can only wipe out everything and reinstall OS from scratch (one reinstall per billing cycle is included).

  • Subscriptions are billed automatically until cancelled (same plan is renewed at end of billing interval). Subscriptions can be cancelled anytime from the billing processor. If you want to terminate your plan make sure you cancel subscription before billing date because already allocated server resources will not be refunded.

  • Location: For S type servers (S1, S1m, S2), default data centers location is Salt Lake City, Tier 3 data centers that are SAS70 Type II and SSAE16 certified. For same price server can be provided in New York (US, East Coast) or London (UK, EU), Amsterdam (Netherlands).
Optionally, for $50/month extra, server can be located in another location of choice: Dallas, Washington DC, Seattle, San Jose, Montreal, Amsterdam, Paris, Frankfurt, Milan. Servers are also available in more exotic locations like Singapore, Hong Kong, Tokyo, Sydney, Sao Paolo but servers allow only 20Tb* transfer per month (instead of 100Tb as rest of servers).
Location for C type servers (C1) is Canada (North America, East Coast) and for same price server can be provided in France (Europe).

  • Copyright Policy: Hosting copyrighted content without permission is not allowed on any of the servers we provide. Any reported copyrighted content held without permission needs to be removed to keep services active.
Handling of copyright related complains is different depending on datacenter location. While for S servers US DMCA applies (server is suspended until content removal), for C servers procedure is less restrictive (only the reported IP is blocked until removal of content and other IPs can be temporary used during cleanup).
Suggestions: Have a system in place on site for handling of copyright claims, review new site contents, don't use trademarks or popular copyrighted content names especially on public site pages (outside member area) as these often trigger bots and search engines looking for such content.

  • Softaculous can be licensed for $24/year to allow easy web installation for popular free turnkey scripts.

What is Wowza Media Server?

Wowza Media Server is unified server software developed by Wowza Media Systems.

The server is used for streaming of live and on-demand video, audio, and RIAs (rich Internet applications) over public and private IP networks to desktop, laptop, and tablet computers, mobile devices, IPTV set-top boxes, internet-connected TV sets, and other network-connected devices.

Wowza Media Server can stream to multiple types of playback clients and devices simultaneously, including the Adobe Flash player, Microsoft Silverlight player, Apple QuickTime Player and iOS devices (iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch), 3GPP mobile phones (Android, BlackBerry OS, Symbian, etc.), IPTV set-top boxes (Amino, Enseo, Roku, Streamit and others) and game consoles such as Wii and PS3.

Wowza Media Server is compatible with all streaming protocols: RTMP, RTMPE, RTMPS, RTMPTE, HDS, HLS, MPEG-DASH, RTSP, RTP, Smooth Streaming, MPEG2, MPEG-TS, and ICY (SHOUTcast / Icecast). The server can also ingest video and audio via Wowza GoCoder? mobile application.

What is RTMP?

Real Time Messaging Protocol (RTMP) is a proprietary protocol developed by Adobe Systems for streaming audio, video and data over the Internet, between a Flash player and a server.
The raw TCP-based RTMP maintains a single persistent connection and allows real-time communication. To guarantee smooth delivery of video and audio streams, while still maintaining the ability to transmit bigger chunks of information, the protocol may split video and data into fragments.

The RTMP defines several channels on which packets may be sent/received, and which operate independently of each other. For example, there is a channel dedicated for handling RPC requests and responses, a channel for video stream data, a channel for audio stream data, a channel for out-of-band control messages (fragment size negotiation, etc.), and so on. During a typical RTMP session, several channels may be active simultaneously at any given time.
